Vice President, Research

Organovo Inc. is an early-stage biotechnology company that is developing and utilizing highly customized 3D human tissues as dynamic models of healthy and diseased human biology for drug development.  Our most advanced program is developing medicines for the treatment of Crohn’s Disease, a debilitating disease of the intestine.

We use proprietary technology to build functional 3D human tissues that mimic key aspects of native human tissue composition, architecture, function, and disease. Our advances include cell type-specific compartments, prevalent intercellular tight junctions, and the formation of microvascular structures. We believe these attributes can enable critical complex, multicellular disease models that we will use to develop more clinically effective drugs for selected therapeutic areas including intestine.

Position Overview:

We are seeking an Vice President of Research to join our team. The VP of Research will be part of the company’s leadership team and contribute to the company’s vision for developing products that can address unmet medical needs. The VP of Research will provide management oversight for a robust drug discovery team. The VP of Research will be accountable for the design and implementation of our intellectual property strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The VP, Research will be part of the company’s leadership team and contribute to the company’s vision for developing products that can address unmet medical needs
  • Manage drug discovery team recruiting, coaching, and developing internal talents within R&D
  • Lead, manage, develop, and retain a high-performance team focused on developing new class of therapeutics
  • Effectively collaborate to develop clinically effective drugs corporate therapeutic areas.
  • Work closely with leaders across the company to plan and execute the R&D strategy.
  • Generate a robust publication record in leading journals, and present findings at key meetings
  • Provide development opportunities and mentoring to the team
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, discovery, and cutting-edge research culture focused on scientific excellence, open communication, and continual improvement

Key Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience leading drug discovery project teams from target validation to IND-enabling studies
  • Track record of excellence and innovation as demonstrated by multiple peer reviewed publications and co-inventorship on patents.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills with an enthusiasm for participating in a fast-paced environment characterized by rigorous science and innovative thinking
  • Demonstrated application of expertise to drug discovery in multiple therapeutic areas
  • Significant experience leading strong multi-disciplinary teams focused on drug discovery
  • Experience and demonstrated success in recruiting, building, managing and developing a team of high-performing scientists across multiple levels
  • A team player and mentor, who listens effectively and invites response and discussion.
  • A collaborator who communicates in an open, clear, complete, timely and consistent manner

Requirements and Desired Experience:

Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D. or similar, with training or practical experience in discovery and preclinical development of drug candidates, most preferably those that modulate immune system/inflammatory diseases.

  • 10+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries, accountable for building and leading a drug discovery capability.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage, motivate and inspire a cross-functional group of scientists.
  • Passionate about working in early-stage companies and comfortable in lean organizations.
